Vikings used their navigation skills to get to their destination.
Navigation-
Vikings used many things to navigate their way to places they wanted to plunder. Vikings used different navigation tools for different weather conditions.
The Sun- The Sun was used when the vikings were leaving in the morning or afternoon. Dependent on whether the sun was setting Vikings could tell which direction they should be heading.
The Sun board- The Sun board was used for sunny days to help navigate their ships by using the shadows on Sun the dial.
The Polaris- The Polaris was a star that was used at night time to navigate the viking ships North. The Polaris today is called the North star. However during Summer Vikings had 24 hours of sunlight so this method was only used during the winter.
Sun Stone- The sun Stone was used for overcast foggy days because it detected the sun and changed colour dependent on where the sun was located.
Raven- Vikings used the Ravens for direction by letting a raven out of a cage, if it flew away they would follow it to land, but if the Raven returned, the Raven was also lost.
Seaweed and wildlife- Seaweed and wildlife were used to tell if they were close to land, if they were close to land they could spot a lot of wildlife and seaweed.
